Lleol

Llanferres Local Energy Organisation
Limited (not-for-profit)

Lleol is a not-for-profit project initiated by Simon Grice, born in Wrexham and grew up in Pantymwyn & Mold and now a recently new member of the Llanferres community.

It’s aims are to initially research, establish the viability and then if suitable implement a smart local energy network for the participating residents of Llanferres village and surrounding communities.

The project is at investigation stage and we are currently investigating the viability of the project and gauging local interest.

Aims

Develop a not-for-profit local renewable energy network serving the residents of Llanferres village and surrounding communities.

Model

Lleol creates a platform for local people & businesses to get together to collectively identify and implement the funding, installation and management of a local renewable energy network.

The members host an appropriate, to their property/land, renewable energy installation, production and/or storage. Once installed the electricity produced is shared with appropriate cost & income allocation between members through a smart local energy platform (SLEP).

Unused electricity is stored or exported back to the National Grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme with the money generated invested back into improving the local renewable energy network.

Success

The number of local energy networks is growing rapidly. Germany has been leading the way for a number of years and now we are seeing a growing number of local energy networks across the UK & Wales.

In 2021, 271 community organisations were involved in electricity generation projects across the UK.

Members of these networks benefit from lower energy prices (in some cases dramatically lower), increased energy security (less reliant on the National Grid) and in some cases a revenue stream which can be taken individually or collective reinvested into the local community.

Support

There is a significant level of financial, legal, operational & management support available from a range of local, national & European organisations.

Timetable

We are aiming to secure initial pilot funding in early Summer ‘23.

Organisation

During May & June we plan to review the most suitable legal & governance structure for the organisation based on:

  • the number of people & businesses wishing to take part
  • the size, scope and scalability of the network
  • the likely funding routes available
  • best practice advice from others

Next steps

At this stage there is no commitment required whatsoever.

Inviting individuals & businesses to express their interest through a simple, secure online form that provides details of their address, property & energy usage.

During May & June we will be:

Inviting individuals who are interested in playing a management & operational role in the organisation to come forward so we can grow our management capability.

  • expertise & experience in financial & project management will initially be targeted
